Bill:
Foxboro makes a product called "I/A report package" that supposedly
automates these tasks. _Do Not Purchase this Package_. It is a waste
of time and effort. Instead, I have included our solution, which is to
use Excel to make SQL calls to the AIM* database directly. Datalink
does not need to be open for this to work, and using this method cleared
up a bunch of our stability problems. Please note that you need to make
sure you are running the correct versions of the add-ins. Previous
versions will not do, and I have no idea if later versions will work.
AIMODBC.dll ; created 2/25/02,
APIserv.dll 3/15/02,
XLODBC32.dll 1/7/02
This is just the portion that makes the SQL calls: you can build any
kind of data manipulation, re-formatting, etc. around it. Please note
that only your ODBC users will be able to do a 'live' update. We have a
limited number of ODBC lisences, and a much large number of casual
users. So, we have a server that opens the file periodically, runs
the macros, and saves the file to a network drive where any intranet
user can look at it. We achieve this by having a macro that can detect
who the current user is. If the current user is anyone but the server,
the macros don't run. This is terrific for daily reports, lab data
summaries, and so on. I have included this macro in the data-getter
file as sub Workbook_open().
Enjoy.

I also have a problem with an AW51D and AIM* Historian running on NT. I
have a separate PC to collect the data using the "Historian Browser" and
Historian Wizard Excell Add-In. The system is very unstable, slows the
PC down considerably and frequently crashes. The data is for Regulatry
purposes. Has anyone any ideas?
Thanks,

I have an AW51D (Solaris machine) and AIM*Historian running on Windows
2000. In order to gather historical data, I use the "Historian Browser"
in AIM*Datalink. This method is NOT time efficient because I am unable
to save a query and make adjustment to the query at a later time (e.g.
change the time range, sample frequency, and add/subtract points).
I followed Section 7 of the AIM*Datalink User's Manual (B0193YJ) to make
use of the Historian Wizard Excel Add-In to overcome the inefficiency of
the "Historian Browser". However, excel becomes very unstable
(frequently
crashes) to the point that I have to remove the Add-In.
Has anyone had success with the Historian Wizard Excel Add-In?
Does anyone have a method to save a historian query so that you are able
to adjust the time range, sample frequency and add/subtract points at a
later time? I tried to use the AIM* ODBC features, but found that the
queries are extremely slow and the feature is also unstable.
