Re: [foxboro] 51F USB Mouse

Thanks for all the info Rich.

This is a real pain, I had 2 of my 5 machine loose use of their trackballs
last night and operations had to call someone in to reboot the machines so
they could use them. This is unacceptable to me, their must be a way to get
the machine to find its trackball again without having to reboot the
machine. If I have to live with a defect like this, I have just wasted a
lot of money.

Joe,
We are using the current-version 50-foot USB extenders on our 51F's, and we
have not found a way to get the machine to re-find the USB devices after USB
power is lost or the cable disconnected, but we would certainly also be
interested in finding a way.
Several things we seem to have found about the USB extenders:
1. The USB extender needs to be powered at the remote end. And it should be
using the same power source as is powering the Sun box. This is important
if, for example, you want to be able to replace the pointing device or
keyboard on the fly.
2. You can only have one pointing device connected.
3. You can not switch between a mouse and trackball on the fly -- requires a
reboot.
4. The Sun box won't boot without the USB powered and a pointing device
connected.
5. The keyboard needs to be plugged into the first slot and the
trackball/mouse into the second on the USB extender in order for one to be
able to replace the pointing device (with a similar kind) on the fly. That
is, if one unplugs the mouse and plugs it back in (or plugs another mouse
in), it will not work again until a reboot if the mouse is connected ahead
of the keyboard on the USB extender. This is empirical data only -- I know
there shouldn't be a difference in the USB ports, but apparently there is
some difference in the order they are scanned, or some such thing.
Perhaps someone else has some input on these USB extenders?
