I've seen some Windows based systems (not I/A) that deliver the right
functionality for a good price.

Windows examples:
- NT 4 workstation with a data collector application that act as a
gateway and transfers data to another system with a SQL server. 26
workstations running 24/7 since over 5 years without any problems. But
everyone is right if he says that NT 4 is enabled for the requirements
of our DCS business! But this is another theme.
- MS SQL Server 2000 runs without any problems 24/7
- Windows services for Unix (for free) support NIS, Telnet, bash, ksh,
r-services, ... a great software

Unix examples:
I've to work with stations based on Solaris that crashes (the whole box)
monthly.
Why is it? It depends on the installed software!!!

What I need in this DCS business is functionality (based on an operating
system)!

The whole operating system and the applications should run without any
big maintenance problems.=20

It is the job of the Software Application Provider to deliver and
support the functionality. This point contains the problem. Out special
DCS business isn't in the focus of the mainstream and the Software
Application Provider have a lot of problems or no interest to realize
the required functionality.

... in my eyes

Regards
Andreas
