[foxboro] Sysdef - remote station committals

Since we've been talking about adding printers recently, I thought I'd
mention the following:

Until Foxboro put out Helpful Hint 1010 last year I hadn't realized you
could commit workstations remotely. The last software installs I've done
(one committal add printers, one reinstall packages to add QFs for new le
and hme drivers) on a multi-node 20 workstation network have all been from a
single box in less than half an hour.

I find it works best from a D or E box and with a committal that only needs
the commit disk. I commit one remote AW/WP, ignore the "eject diskette"
messages after the committal, leave the disk in the drive, and go on to
commit the next remote AW/WP. After I've done them all, I can take out the
commit diskette, put in the reconcile diskette and go around the boxes
again.

For those without access to the CSC site, HH1010 is below. Hope you find it
as useful as I have.

Subject: Reconfiguring the correct devices for Software Install.
 Source: TAC

Problem: On a 51 Series station in the Software Install environment,
Config --> Install_AW -->Utilities, there is a pick for Install Remote
Processor. When Install Remote Processor is selected, it generates a
list of stations that software can be installed on. Once one of these
stations is selected, we are able to access the station through its
Software Install environment. This allows software to be installed
remotely on the station through its Software Install functions
(ReInstall Selected Packages from the Utilities pick, Committed Install
Files, Release Updates from the Install Software pick). Once any of
these functions are chosen, a blue dialog box appears with the message:

"Unable to provide access to drive st0 on host. Please change
peripherals before attempting another install."

Solution: For the 51 Series processors the only software media used to
install software (Day 0, Release Update or QF) is a CDROM or floppy
diskette. The drive st0 in the message is the streaming tape drive,
which is not used for software install. The primary functions for the
streaming tape drive on a 51 Series processor is backing up and
restoring the 51 Series processor.

When the Software Install Environment is opened, the
/usr/fox/swi/DEVICES file is created from the device options listed in
the /usr/fox/swi/PLATFORM file. The /usr/fox/swi/DEVICES shows the
devices available to install the software. Here is example of the
/usr/fox/swi/DEVICES file.

# cd /usr/fox/swi
# more DEVICES
FLOP3 fd0
ST150 st0
CDROM sd6a

The /usr/fox/swi/PLATFORM file looks like this:

# cd /usr/fox/swi
# more PLATFORM
PLATFORM_TYPE AW51
UPDATE_DISKID 10071
OPT_DIRECTORY /opt/fox
DEVICE_FLOP3 fd0 3.50_Floppy
DEVICE_FLOP5 None 5.25_Floppy
DEVICE_ST150 st0 150_MB_Tape
DEVICE_CDROM sd6a Compact_Disc

Therefore to resolve the problem, we need to edit the
/usr/fox/swi/PLATFORM file and remove the following entries, which do
not apply to install software on a 51 Series station:

DEVICE_FLOP5 None 5.25_Floppy
DEVICE_ST150 st0 150_MB_Tape

After editing and saving the /usr/fox/swi/PLATFORM file, it should look
like this:

# more PLATFORM
PLATFORM_TYPE AW51
UPDATE_DISKID 10071
OPT_DIRECTORY /opt/fox
DEVICE_FLOP3 fd0 3.50_Floppy
DEVICE_CDROM sd6a Compact_Disc

This is correct since the 3.50 floppy drive and CDROM will be the only
devices that the 51 Series station, in this case, the AW51 will look
for to install software.

Now, we need to correct the /usr/fox/swi/DEVICES file, which has the
incorrect device information for the 51 Series station. The easiest
solution is to simply remove the /usr/fox/swi/DEVICES file.

#cd /usr/fox/swi
   #rm DEVICES

The final Step is to enter the Software Install Environment. DO NOT DO
ANYTHING while in the Software Install environment. Once Software
Install is opened, pick Quit from the menu to exit. Just the motion of
entering and exiting the Software Install environment will create the
new, corrected /usr/fox/swi/DEVICES file.

This can be verified by checking the /usr/fox/swi/DEVICES file, which
should list the following devices.

#cd /usr/fox/swi
   #more DEVICES
   FLOP3 fd0
   CDROM sd6a
