[foxboro] Defunct process?

Here's something I noticed on many of my AW-51s (B- and D-style):
18AW01-dmdo> ps -eaf | grep defunct
root 1727 1721 0 5:07 <defunct>
dmdo 18529 18523 0 09:51:17 pts/3 0:00 grep defunct
18AW01-dmdo> ptree 1727
1721 /opt/fox/hstorian/bin/hist_srv
1727 <defunct>
So it looks like it's historian related. I can kill the defunct one, but
another defunct process will be there if we enter and exit the (legacy)
Historian Configurator. What is this defunct process and what caused it?
(BTW, we are still using Display Manager.)
Thanks for any info.
