I volunteered to forward postings about this issue for some users that feel
that they would suffer adverse effects from within their own organization or
Foxboro if their identity is made known. Comments follow.
I have been using Foxboro Unix since the 1990s, from AP20 to AW50,
AW51A, B, C, D, E. First Foxboro NT machine, a Zenith Pentium 133 at IA
V5.0, it was a nightmare.
Now some users are insisting Windows XP even though they were happy
Unix users for many years. Microsoft has come a long way and now XP is so
much better than NT. When compared to Unix:
1. Security, patches, patches and more patches
2. X terminal, not available with XP, we're all looking forward to Windows
2003 Server. I found that NT Terminal service is as powerful as Unix AW51s X
Windows, and much easier to configure and use.
3. ICC only from local AW. With eXceed, one can open remote ICC from another
NT / XP box with some simple Unix scripts, but only one ICC session per XP,
that means if the XP hosts many CP, one can open an ICC from another XP / NT
box remotely. There is a program that allow users to open multiple sessions
of remote ICC just like any Unix machines, but not across platform like from
Unix to XP, XP to Unix
4. Backup / restore of NT / XP. We found that third party software like
Norton Ghost can do wonders, this is a powerful application that provides
lots flexibilities to users to do backups via CD / DVD, tapes, Networked
Drives, USB devices, etc....
5. Though not officially supported, we install Microsoft office on Foxboro
AW70 XP machines. The new alarm management interface AIM*Inform is a very
good package that retrieves alarms from AIM*Historians. This only runs on
Windows machines.
6. Some Unix scripts need to be updated before it can be used in XP. It's a
good feature that Unix Bourne shell scripts that can be use in a Windows box
