[foxboro] Advant - I/A

Now this is something I would also love to hear. Out here we are using both
I/A & advant side by side. To add to it, we have the Advant workstations
installed into I/A bays. And our AW sits next to Advant IMS. Funny stuff
and we have had both the service engineers working side by side.

I think everybody out here knows the goodies & badies of I/A, and that too
much more than me.

About Advant - the operator interface is real good & very user friendly.
Operator can call as many displays as he wants or system can handle (as far
as I know) (around 5-6 I have normally seen open). They are all resizeable,
dragable just like Mr Bills Windows. And here we have to pay for every
additional display (How I hate no dm license available).

Alarm interface is also good, you have a very small window at top, and
current alarms keep appearing there only. But once acknowledged and
returned, forget it, you gotta access it from IMS. It would be a good idea
if Foxboro guys had a look at it.

Now a very funny thing - if you want to create a simple start / stop
overlay, and the channels that you have assigned are not consecutive
channels on same IO Module and have different tag names assigned, you have
to write a logic involving 6-7 blocks to make it work. Goodness gracious
me.

And one thing that's pretty boring is, for history you go to IMS, for
configuration you go to ES, and add to it nothing much to tweak around
with.

Good thing is it has a network for control traffic which they call DCN, and
second network which is thick ethernet TCP/IP used for remote logins & file
transfers etc. This is a default thing in advant which is something we have
to do additionally in I/A via second ethernet.

Maybe my opinions are biased, cause I happen to be inclined in favour of
I/A, and add to it my knowledge about Advant is very limited (doesn't mean
I know much about I/A -:) - I get along thanks to all you great folks on
the list).

And what's best about I/A - thecassandraproject.org / freelist - has any
DCS got that, I don't know. Thanks to Duc & David Johnson and all of you
out there and of course need I mention Alex Johnson.

Can't speak for everyone, but I'd love to hear about what you like about
I/A
Series vs. Advant.
