Hi Mike,
The instructions worked just as you described. However, the download/
install failed for these reasons:
W: Failed to fetch
http://astromirror.uchicago.edu/ubuntu/pool/universe/c/claws-mail/claws-mail_3.7.4-1ubuntu1_i386.deb
404 Not Found
W: Failed to fetch
http://astromirror.uchicago.edu/ubuntu/pool/universe/c/claws-mail/claws-mail-i18n_3.7.4-1ubuntu1_all.deb
404 Not Found
Apparently, the closest archive in Chicago does not have the modules
requested.
How do I get past the automatic search in that particular archive?
How do I locate an archive that does have the modules? Synaptic did
find them in the Universe but I don't know how to find the archive that
Synaptic is looking at or how to redirect Synaptic to locate that
archive and download from it.
All help appreciated.

Claws Mail is in the universe repository for Ubuntu Lucid (10.04) You will need
to add the universe repository:
Go to the System menu / Administration / Synaptic Package Manager
Enter your password at the prompt
In Synaptic go to Settings / Repositories
A window titled "Software Sources" should open
It should be on the tab "Ubuntu Software"
Check the box for Universe
Press the close button at the bottom of the "Software Sources" window
Press the Reload button (at the top left of the Synaptic window.
After it finishes downloading the new packages claws-mail should be available.

Windows
As far as I know you need to install gpg4win (Gnu Privacy Guard) to get the
Claws Mail package.
Go to http://www.claws-mail.org/win32/
download either gpg4win (It goes to a new page)
or gpg4win-light-2.1.1-svn1666-colin.exe.
run the executable and you should be good.
I hope you don't mind that I also sent this to the fgmlug list in the hope it
might prove useful.

I have been trying to load Claws Mail in both Linux and Windows. So far
no success.
I use Ubuntu Lucid (10.4) and found out that Claws Mail is not part of
that distribution. It is in 11.4 but I have not decided to upgrade to
Nutty at this point.
Where can I find a safe distribution from which to download it? I have
found PPAs which scare me because they are listed as not safe.
Your thoughts appreciated.
