Below is a link to a new app in the app-store (we are speaking Apple
here). It is an object recognition app, so it uses the camera. It also reads
text, when you choose it in settings. The app is causing a stir in the
Voice-Over using community! You can take a shot of something quite
complicated and, generally, get a good description back. I also used it on a
newspaper, laying on the table, and it read the whole thing to me!! It
didn't do well with columns, but, as a free OCR app, it is very, very good!!
You can also use it to tell you what your pictures are, in your camera roll.
It seems, from others' experience, quite useful as a reader of computer
screens (you know, when Jaws stops working?) I don't know if it works for
distant objects in it's OCR mode, such as for bus-stop information boards,
someone who is near one will have to tell me, but, for a free app, why not
give it a try?
One caviat: because I have a very slow broadband, the results take an
age to come back to me, this, however, is not the experience of others
though and for you who liv in less remote areas, it should work really well.
Tips for using the app: at the bottom right of the screen is the "take
picture" button. Then you position your phone to take the shot and press the
up-volume button. You will hear the camera take the shot and VO should say
"use picture", double-tap and wait....
