The OST file is a replica of your mailbox. Every change made to the
Exchange mailbox is reflected in the OST file. Every change in the OST
file is reflected in the Exchange mailbox.
If cached Exchange mode is set, then when Outlook is connected, the
"Mailbox -" is actually referring to the OST, and the updates are
happening quietly and magically in the background. If you go offline,
then the OST is still being used.
Whenever you are in cached mode, the OST is your primary message store.

I am not clear when the OST file comes into play. If the OST (like a
PST) holds the inbox, sent-mail, calendars etc., when are the contents
of this displayed? When my Outlook is connected, I can view "Personal
Folders"
and "Mailbox - ..." (server folders). For example, if I happen to go
offline ("Work Offline") is that when the OST steps in, pretending to be
the server mailbox with the last known content? Or does the OST play
some other role?
