forwarding

Hi All;
How can I forward the emails existing into a mail box for a user who has moved 
to a new company and he would like all of the unread emails to be forwarded to 
the current email address.
The situation is say user1@xxxxxxx was an email address into my exchange, user1 
then moved to new company where he was given a new email address user@xxxxxxx , 
What I did I created a contact object for the new email address i.e 
user@xxxxxxx and the forward emails directed to user1@xxxxxxx ,however the user 
is still sayin that he hasn't received all of the unread emails.Can anyone 
please help me as to how I can forward all of the unread emails into his former 
to his new email address?
Please assist.
