How is your disk channel system configured?

How many drives?
Multiple channels? 

I also am using CA for both backup and virus.  What version of
anti-virus and backup agents do you have installed?

yes, computer associates on both.  I contacted them for the virus scan
and they gave me some settings to try which stoped the store from going
As for the backup agent, I shut it down (the service) to take it out of
the equation until I can figure out if it was actually causing a problem
or not.  The virus fix was to stop it from scanning the actual database
