domain naming

Hello,
I am a newbie designated to deploy Exchange 2003 just for email usage.
We don't have Active Directory in place. Our registered domain name is
jsums.edu. If I use a subdomain, let say ad.jsums.edu as root-domain for
AD, can I still have the email address in the format user@xxxxxxxxx,
instead of user@xxxxxxxxxxxx?
I was thinking about an MX record on the public DNS server as
"jsums.edu mailserver.ad.jsums.edu". Will this work?
