cannot connect to exchange 5.5 server

I'm running Exchange 5.5 sp3. About once a month or so, out of nowhere,
clients (outlook 2000) can no longer connect to their mailboxes. The
server looks perfect, nothing in the event log, no high cpu/memory
utilization....nothing. Can't stop/restart the service, must restart at
this point, then it's fine again. Help! thanks.
