Mail Essentials is excellent, if you configure it.

I spent 5 weeks on and off, had it blocking every bit of spam that came
in, and it was only blocking around 3 false positives weekly.....then
the MD got in on the admin act.....now we are back to square one...users
with a couple of hundred spams a day...LOL...I washed my  hands of it as
soon as I learnt he was fiddling with it.

Mail Essemtials must be congiured properly obviously, but if you didn't
give it 2-3 weeks to learn or didn't do any white list work, your right,
wont give you results that you want. I highly recommend. I have only
seen a couple of other products, one which is the barracuda appliance,
which seems to work well. No bayesian filtering but works well.

There is no such thing as the only way. What works great for you may
work so so or not at all for others. Personally, I trialed Mail
Essentials on one of my client's Exchange server, and I did not like it.
Maybe I am spoiled with all the flexibility I have in what I use
already.

The configuration I use for my server and clients probably works just as
well (dare I say better) as GFI Mail Essentials does for you.

What is important as you stated is you absolutely have to have something
scanning the incoming messages for both spam and viruses, and
potentially malicious content would be a benefit as well.

Personally, I do not recommend Mail Essentials only because it did not
work for me. However, I will not talk against it either. In fact, the
only software I will talk against is one made by a vendor with Sun and
belt in their name. (Did you catch the Consumers Reports article on
client side anti-spam software? Of the products tested, theirs came in
last!)
