Linux running Postfix MTA + SpamAssassin + ClamAV is our first layer of
defense. It has been the ticket for us. You can pick just about any
flavor of linux you want. We use Fedora because it is fast to set up,
and relatively easy to find things. There are several good "recipies"
for setting up Postfix with SpamAssassin. I think it took me about a
2-3 days to get my first one going. I did not really know much about
Linux or Unix MTA's.

Fedora comes with Postfix right on the CD, and you can use that, but I
would highly recommend not using the one on the CD. Get the latest RPM
from http://postfix.wl0.org/en/

Grab SpamAssassin from www.spamassassin.org

You can grab linux ISOs that you can burn to cd from www.linuxiso.org

I used information from http://www.advosys.ca/papers/ to set up postfix.

We have about 280 mailboxes. I run SpamAssassin on a 1.2Ghz box with
1GB of RAM. We are currently rejecting over 18,000 emails per day with
Postfix header checks, a couple of RBL's (Always use RBL's with extreme
caution) and some other goodies that Postfix provides.

And of course... It was "free". The software was free. The server it
runs on is actually an older Dell Optiplex desktop that has run 24/7 for
almost 2 year that was not being used (free). My time was not free.
But I did learn a lot about linux and how mail systems work. We have an
extremely reliable and accurate weapon against spam. And I know how it
works, and I have complete control over every aspect of the spam
checking process.

Best of luck with whatever you choose.

Ray
