Robert,
You don't need the FE server. You can enable FBA without a FE server.
There are added advantages to using FBA with OWA, even in a single
server environment. You can have better control over the client access
from Public/Private computers and cookie timeouts etc. Also, FBA uses
SSL and encryption which is the recommended way to transfer private data
over the Internet. You need to get an SSL certificate though.

Raj,
I'm trying to understand the value that an FE server adds other than
"single name space" to multiple BE servers.
For us, this value can be easily handled by multiple URL's or
consolidating mailbox stores to 1 server.
If I don't really need a FE server in my configuration, then it
appears I'm not forced into using SSL with OWA as a non-FE server
supports other authentication methods besides basic.
Thanks, Robert

 Robert,
You can use either HTTP or FBA with HTTPS. FBA is the recommended
option.

Is anyone using OWA 2003 over the web without forms based
authentication? If so, which HTTP authentication method are using with
OWA?

It seems that if you use a FE server (because you have multiple BE
servers), then you have to use FBA.

Thanks, Robert
