You might take a look at a Server monitoring product called ServScan at
http://www.omnitrend.com/ServScan/ServScan.html

It comes with templates to monitor event logs for problems with Exchange
5.5 and Exchange 2000 services.  It will notify via text messaging to cell
phone, pager, email, or network message.

Based on your description, I think this will solve your concern.
