SMTP virtual server down

My exchange server stopped receiving message at 12 noon PST yesterday. There
are no log messages in the event viewer and I discovered that the logging
option on the SMTP virtual server was not checked. What could have caused
this? And should I check the logging option on the SMTP virtual server for
future problem determination?
