[ExchangeList] SMTP Question

I run two VBulletin v3.5.x systems on different web boxes which are on the same 
network as my Exchange 2003 server. I have found with trial and error that I 
need to setup the SMTP server with basic authentication (clear text) enabled 
even though Microsoft recommends that you disable it.
 
I am wondering why this would be? And if there is any kind of work around which 
would allow me to turn it off?
