Exchange mailbox names are based on the Display Name of the user object at the time of creation.  Once the mailbox is created, you can't change that mailbox name.  If you really need to change the name of the physical mailbox, use Exmerge or Outlook to pull out all the e-mail into a PST (don't forget Exmerge can only create 2GB pst files), delete the mailbox, change the user's display name in ADUC, then create a mailbox for that user.

If you have Ontrack's Powertools, you can also associate the current user's mailbox to another user account, change the display name for the user, create a new mailbox for the user, then user Powertools to copy everything from the old mailbox to the new mailbox.

Right. I forgot to answer that part of the question.

Renaming any of that stuff using Active Directory Users and Computers isn't going to create a new mailbox. The names are just for you to see and the servers use some other number to link them that you don't even care about. Well you care but you don't need to worry about changing it because you can't with the normal tools.

I don't think it matters because I think AD uses the msExchMailboxGuid attribute to associate the mailbox to the user.
Just a shot in the dark...

Email addresses are independent of the mailbox name.

The mailbox name is not the alias but appears to me to be the same name as the Display Name. The Alias is what gets attached to the domain name to form the email address if you have the system do that part automatically.

The Display Name in the General tab for Properties for the User in Active Directory Users and Computers is the name that shows up as the Mailbox Name. It takes a while to synchronize but the change does happen. That is also the name that shows up in the Global Address List.

Subject: [ExchangeList] Renaiming physical mailbox in Exchange 2003

Hi,

I have a user who's mailbox I need to re-name.  I need to rename his physical mailbox that resides in the Mailbox Store.  How do I do that exactly?

From what I have found, the mailbox is the same name as the "Alias" which is displayed in the AD properties in the "Exchange General" tab.  If I replace the current "Alias" with the new "Alias" will this rename the existing mailbox transparently to the user (so no mailbox are lost and it is transparent to the user) or will this create a brand new, empty mailbox wth the new name, and detach the old one, which will then languish somewhere, and the user will call me in a panic saying "where did all the stuff in my mailbox go!!??"

TIA!

JW

(Note:  I do not need to rename the email address, that would be the SMTP Email).
