in your scenario, you can to configure costs (routes) to do a first IMC sends
email to second imc or either, throught internet or dedicated link.
To do this, you need to configure a routing groups with costs.
In w2k it's very ease.

I have a dedicated link between the first imc and the first smtp
relay. And the same for the second imc and the second smtp relay.

I have an internal link (WAN) between the imcs servers. The stmp
relay doesnt have a dedicated link among them, but I can do one smtp relay
access the other one if this is necessary.

        Thanks

Hello, how are you? Thank you for replying my message.

Well, let me try to explain it better. English is not my first
language, so, I didnt make myself clear at all :-))

My Organization has 2 sites in different locations, different
cities. This in a near future, ok?

Site A will have: 1 IMC, 1 smtp relay which goes to and comes from
the Internet.

Site B will have: 1 IMC, 1 smtp relay which goes to and comes from
the Internet, using another way out.

I would like: Site A uses as much as it can the first smtp relay
(its own), but if this smtp relay is down, it should automatically point to
the other smtp relay, which resides in the other site. And vice-versa.

Actually my main worry is if smtp relay is down, if it is down, I
would like IMC pointed to the other smtp relay. If one IMC is down I know
the Exchange users would point to the other IMC automatically.

Which configuration should I do in the IMCs?

        Thank you very much.

I am a bit confused here. The IMC reside only on the site that it is
installed. Say you have two Sites , Site A and Site B, Site A has one
IMC and Site B has its own IMC. These two IMC cannot share. If the IMC
in Site A failed then Site A cannot send mails at all. The reason is
IMC has to convert the internal X.400 address to smtp address, and
the X.400 address for the two sites are different.

For redundancy each sites should have two IMC.

This is my understanding for the past 4+ yrs as Exchange admin,
we have two sites in our org, I manage one of the site. Thru out
the yrs I cannot administer the IMC on the other site.

http://www.MSExchange.org/

        Hi everyone.

I have a question about IMC and SMTP Relay.

I am doing some changes in my Exchange Organization. In the future,
it will have 2 sites, 2 imc and 2 smtp relay, These sites will be in
diferent geografic locations.

I am planning to put one imc in each site, and one smtp relay for
each site as well, in a dmz zone.

My question is: I want users from site A use as much as they can the
imc in site A and this imc in site A use as much as it can the smtp relay in
site A. The same thing for site B. If one smtp relay falls, the imc should
use the smtp relay in the other site.

I think I know how to do it about users using the first imc, but I
am not sure how to do it for imc use one smtp relay and if the smtp relay is
down, it must to use the second smtp relay, instead of waiting for the first
one go up again.

I know I should use dns instead of ip address in imc, connections,
message delivery, but how to do it? Should I creat a fqdn for both smtp
relays, using A record? Which is my garantee the site one will always use
the first smtp relay, instead of using one of them each time? I am kind of
confused here.

        Any ideas?

        Thanks All

        imc = Internet Mail Connector
