Perhaps I have missed a thread here....BUT Public folders are searchable. By default you can search for property-based attributes. If you would like full search capabilities, set indexing on the public folder.

Sharepoint comes to mind.

Public folders aren't searchable from the Outlook client mostly because of
the impact I would imagine. I wouldn't want someone to be able to search
public folders generically. Sharepoint is designed with indexing and such
and is likely better suited to the application you have in mind.

I noticed that the search feature in Outlook does not work on Public Folders
either - is there a way around this? I was hoping to create a history file
system for our clientele that would allow users to send documents to the
folder as well as emails - is there another solution then that is web
accessible like PF?

You won't want to replicate more PF's or content than can be replicated in
the default 15 minute time period as a best practice. Be more selective of
the content you replicate between sites if you can and try not to let your
PF's become your file system/DFS system ;)

One other thing: keep in mind that restoration of Public Folders is a bear.
I'd much rather hack my left foot off with a dull rusty spoon than restore a
public folder if given the choice. If restoration is something that will
occur, then DFS or straight file share is a better way to go. If you just
want to share information that is common and often read only and easily
replaceable, among mail clients then public folders meets this requirement.

What are replication limitations - can you expand on that a little bit more?

Theoretically, yes there is a limit to the number of PF's you can have.
I've seen many thousands (tens of thousands for that matter) of PF's and it
*works*. The key to keeping it usable is organization. You have to keep it
organized and stay on top of it. One of the best things you can do is limit
the number of top level folders you have since it's harder to prevent users
from creating them like they do files :) Replication limitations and common
sense are your best guides.

Conflict resolution kicks in. The last one usually wins, but if the
conflict occurs, the owner(s) of the folder gets a conflict notice.

You may want to use files or even sharepoint if document conflicts are a
potential issue.

Is there a limit to the number of public folders or the amount of data that can be stored in Public Folders - (other than physical limitations of hard drive, etc)

What happens when someone wants to edit a document that is in a public
folder - or two people try to edit at different times - then synchronize
Outlook - do they overwrite what the other person may have put in?
