Why not host your own mail server, but use a 3rd party as a gateway. That
why, the gateway server will receive everything from the Internet and then
send it to yours.

The main reason I don't want to host our own mail is reliability. There are
a few factors involved in our network and Internet connection that don't, at
the current time, make it as reliable as I think it should be to switch to
hosting our own mail. I'd prefer the security of having our web host's mail
server - which is up 99.5% of the time - always sitting out there able to
receive our incoming mail and keep it until my server goes and gets it.

It's definitely something I've thought about, though, and will definitely
move to sometime in the short-term future (6 to 18 months, I think). We're
going to be moving offices within the next year, and that figures into it
also.

uhm, at the risk of sounding silly, why not host your own mail? It's easier
than you think.

Thanks for the answer Doug. My main question stems from the main reason
we're needing to make this move: we need more POP3 accounts than our web
host will allow (not to mention they can't figure out how to live up to
their claim of "unlimited redirects").

So what I want to do is get rid of ALL POP3 accounts on this external server
except for the one that's made to catch all emails that don't match one of
the existing POP3 accounts (which will be all mail once I delete all the
accounts). Then have my POP3 connector log in under this single account and
retrieve all mail and route it via Exchange to the appropriate recipient(s).

What are you referring to when you say "alternate adx"?
