Outlook XP "to" text disappears

Never saw this one before and hope someone can help. I have a laptop with
Windows 2000 and Office XP, with all the patches and updates. For some
reason, when you type a new email, the name(s) you type in the to:/cc:
lines disappears. If you double click, in what appears to be a blank
space, it will pull up the name from the Contacts. If you send it, it gets
to the recipients. If you check in the sent mail, the to: line is blank as
well.
