Which is your Incoming Internet mail gateway for @xyzcompany.com ?
Exchange 5.5 or Exchange 2000 ?

It does work if we send email from the old Exchange 5.5 server to the
new Exchange 2000 server, just not the other way. We use an external
mail server to setup accounts and for routing purposes.

In addition to what Michael said,
This would work only if you have direct connection between your email
servers and the second company. If the two companies are not connected
directly, or if there is no way to rely messages directly from your
Exchange server to the SMTP server in the second company, this will not
work. Note that from the Internet, all emails destined for
@xyzcompany.com will be routed to your SMTP gateway directly, so you
cannot go back to the Internet to re-route the same message to another
SMTP server.

Raj

Yes, with some munging around.

See: KB 321721, XCON: Sharing SMTP Address Spaces in Exchange 2000
Server and Exchange Server 2003
And: KB 319759, How to Configure Exchange to Forward Messages to a
Foreign Messaging System That Shares the Same SMTP Domain Name Space

Is there a way to allow outbound mail from Exchange 2000 that has the
same domain as internal email. Example: ssmith@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx is
internal, but we would like to be able to send to jdoe@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
which is on another company server. Currently we cannot do this so we
have to print and deliver. Long story as to how we got into this
situation.
