Well, forget about what and where the M: drive is pointing at.  Instead,
move your message stores to the D: drive.  In System Mgr, open up
servers, the server, First storage group, then select the properties of
the message store you wanna move, and put in a different path.  It does
take down the message store, you youll have to do it on off hours.
