I was hoping to use a Windows based operating system as I haven't used Linux
must and it might take me a while to get to grips with it. Any Windows based
solutions?

There are many way of doing this.

We used Solaris 8 running sendmail 8.12x.
For antivirus we put in Trendmicro Interscan Virus Wall.
Sendmail is quite a pain to configure, I was on the Sendmail
newsgrp to ask a lot of question before get it configure and
work correctly, with no relay and mailertable, smarthost etc.

One fellow in the newsgrp that correspond with me at the end
choose postfix which he said is much easier to use.

On that note I was at Sunbelt site, someone actually use Linux
and was told by an expert that he used FreeBSD which is a much
secure OS. For any OS that is put in DMZ must do hardening
which can be quite complicated. When I was doing this the
general preception at that time is NT4.0 is not secure and not
suitable to put in DMZ. May be win2k is more secure, have to
do a study on that.

Make sure the mx record in DNS is configure correctly, also you must have
at least two mail relay servers to provide redundancy.

We have Exchange 2000 on our network and to increase security I'm looking
into putting some sort of mail proxy / relay agent onto the DMZ of our
firewall. The outside world will see it as our mail server and it will relay
email onto Exchange. Has anyone done this before and if so what mail proxy /
relay have you installed.

TIA
