MS Search instance query

Hi,
I'm new to Exchange 2000 and would like to seek your views on the following:
(1) Is MS Search service necessary if we do not have Full-Index capability
enabled and we're not running any SQL related applications on a server (which
is solely meant for E2K)?? How does this differ if now I'm running E2K in a
"clustered" environment (i.e using MS Cluster Solution) as I understand there
is a configured "cluster MS Search resource" we have in the cluster servers?
