Hi Jason,
It does seem like they're getting aggressive with hiring the best people they
find out in the community. I think they're head hunters have actually learned
how to mine newsgroups, mailing lists and Web sites :)
Can't say what they look for in a resume. I never submitted one, not even after
the job offer was made. They just needed to search Thomas Shinder on google and
talk to some of the other product groups that I've done consulting work for in
the past.
There's no one size fits all method. But a good general approach is, good very
good at a couple of things you really like doing, and then try to be the
world's expert in those areas. Even if you don't end up being the world's
expert, you'll be a lot better off for trying. Then contribute to the MS
newsgroups and mailing lists like this one. Always be professional, never have
a negative word about anyone or anything, and comes up with good answers that
solve common and uncommon problems. People will notice you, and they will tell
others, and MS ends up finding out that you're good.
Get lots of hands-on experience. Production network experience is a must,
because you must be able to understand the stresses and strains, and the
realities of troubleshooting on live production devices. You just can't get
that type of emotional and intellectual experience on lab networks. However,
you should put many many hours in lab networks too. Try to deploy simple
scenarios first. Start by doing step by steps by following the instructions.
Then repeat the step by step procedures, but do it from memory and based on
your understanding of the why you're performing the procedures.
There you go. Sheesh, I haven't doled out career advice for almost five years
:))

Thomas,
Thanks for the response regarding the MS interviewing process. I met a
MS employee at a wedding this past weekend, and he said MS are on a hiring
rampage. I'd LOVE to work for MS myself, but I'm concerned my tech skills lay
outside their forte (I have worked in the Industrial Controls industry for the
past 8 yrs, but I handle the "IT" responsibilities and interface with many MS
products on a daily basis).
Any advice on how to "spice up" a resume? What flags would MS be
looking for, in terms of resumes?
Thanks for any advice!

I had the opportunity to interview for a position with MS. I have to
say that the people at MS are the nicest and most professional group of people
I've ever had the pleasure to meet. The interview process was fun and I got to
know a lot about them and they got to know a lot about me. They offered me a
position, but I couldn't convince my wife to accept the pay cut I would have
had would be worth it. MS would have been a great place to work and I hope that
in the future I can convince my wife that I should give it another chance.
Don't fear the interview process. Be yourself, be honest, put your best
foot forward, and you'll do well. You'll learn a lot when you start working
with them.

Thanks, Manju!
I'd love to work at MS.
So far i was contacted last week and had a 25min HR type
interview on the phone.
The recruiter then said he would call this week for a 30min
phone tech interview and if that went well, I would be called in for a face to
face.
I haven't heard from him yet to set up the tech phone interview.
As i said, the only thing i'm kinda nervous about is Exchange
5.5 questions as i haven't touched an exchange 5.5 server in about 3.5 years.
Thanks for taking an interest!
