Items in Public Folders Disappearing

Recently we have been having items in a public folder disappearing. The
folder can only be accessed by owners and owner permissions are assigned
to only two people, the IT Director and myself. There doesn't seem to be
any regularity to what disappears or when items disappear. Has anyone
seen this before? Ideas?
We are running Exchange 2000 Enterprise Ed SP 3 on Windows 2000 Server
SP3.
