Internet mail Connector on Exchange 5.5 runs HIGH CPU when started.

Does anyone know why the internet mail connector would run at 90% CPU on
exchange server 5.5-sp4 when it is started? Local mail is fine - but when
the internet mail connector is run the server grinds to a halt - we've
deleted it and recreated it and still the same results. Any help is
appreciated.
