-------------------------------------------------------Well, OK, but you're the
one who brought legal requirements into the
discussion. :-)

In addition, as has been pointed out many times before, PSTs are a false
economy when it comes to disk space. I won't go into details about loss
of SIS, corruption, data management, disk space used on other servers,
etc as we've all been there, talked about that.

And, is "90% of the time" really good enough for your company if, as
you said below, one of the reasons for PSTs is for "legal retention of
mail data"?? It definitely wouldn't be good enough for us.

Any archiving system (like Zantaz's EAS) worth anything also allows
users access to their own e-mail so there's no loss of functionality
from that perspective.

http://www.msexchange.org
-------------------------------------------------------I think we are
side tracking from 'archiving' from and end user perspective. One of the
main issues is end users always filling up the server mailboxes and then
asking for more space. That's when the PST files come in to place as
archives. Our helpdesk has standard reply to any one asking for more
storage space in exchange server, "archive old items to PST files and
delete from the server mailbox". It works 90% of the time.

Even when written to CD-R or DVD+/-R ? That's pretty non-modifiable.

E-mail archiving systems should be used for legally-required archiving
of email. PSTs do not meet the requirement of being a non-modifiable
repository.

http://www.msexchange.org
-------------------------------------------------------While your first
point is some what valid, the main reason for many users to have PST
files is for archiving purposes and legal retention of mail data. This
helps the server mailbox from filling up. OST files are a replica of
your real time server mailbox. So, while OST files are useful for
working offline on your server mailbox, and better performance while
connecting over a slow link, PST file are still needed for archiving.
The best practice would be to create PST files that are not overly
large, keep a good backup of your PST files, such as burning them onto
DVD etc.

All PSTs are evil. Stay away...

Use OSTs for offline access to E-mail.
