So the c:\inetpub\mailroot\queue will get great numbers of messages,
right? Once I had an issue like this and the culprit was GFI
MailEssentials' Bayes database. If I disabled it, the message flow would
go back to normal. To solve it, I had to trim the bayesian database
manually, as described on GFI's knowledgebase.

Now my GFI box is up for 144 days straight =)

We tried that, and it has no effect on the queued mail. The SMTP
Gateway is a new dual processor server with 2 GB ram * so it is strong
enough to handle the mail flow. Here is what I notice when the queues
build up*Mail from external sites are delivered to the SMTP Gateway
machine, but the gateway is extremely slow in delivering them to the
Exchange Server. Mail from internal is delivered to the SMPT Gateway
Machine, but the gateway does not forward them out* Restart IIS * no
effect Restart or Disable GFI services * no effect I am able to perform
MX lookups on external domains and send mail via a Telnet DOS session No
event errors/logs No system processes are going nuts* No virus scans are
taking place One sidenote * the gateway is in the DMZ and is a member
of the domain. Thanks for any assistance,
Regards,
Chris

http://www.MSExchange.org/The IIS SMTP service can handle hundreds of
thousands of messages per day depending on hardware, so I doubt that is
the cause of the problem. I would first look at DNS issues, including
timeouts and cache problems. Next time it happens, try clearing the DNS
cache on the DNS servers that both IIS is using as well as the GFI
products. John TeServices For You

Subject: [exchangelist] Gateway for Exchange 2003
http://www.MSExchange.org/Hello all, Our Exchange systems forward all
mail to a 'Smart Host' that resides in our DMZ. The Smart Host is
nothing more than a Windows 2003 Server with IIS SMTP services and GFI
Mail Essentials and Mail Security. As far as blocking/preventing
SPAM and Virus' mail * it works GREAT. My problem is that the SMTP
service seems to flake out 2 to 3 times a week here lately. The SMTP
service is still running and receiving mail from Exchange, and it
receives mail from the internet, but the queues will back up and not
deliver the mail at all* A reboot of the server will get the server to
process mail again and flush out the queues* Restarting the services
does nothing to assist and there are no events in any of the logs.
Can anyone point me to any information that indicates what mail volumes
the standard IIS SMTP mail service can handle? I want to verify that
we are not overwhelming the service with too much volume. Regards,
Chris------------------------------------------------------
