Thanks very much for your help Richard, very useful stuff to know. May well
be in touch soon for that contact that you mentioned earlier.

It was considerably less. Mainly because there was a great deal more
emphasis on the administrator for tweaking your spam rules to capture
spam. So, if you were slow to get rules edited/created, a lot more spam
would get through. The Messagelabs system uses heuristics and a DB of
known spam to do the filtering. There is no rule generation necessary
from the administrator.

What we do currently is have all the spam that Messaglabs catches
redirected to a different email account. We keep one week worth incase
anyone reports an email that they were expecting has gone missing, false
positive. We have an auto-archive setup on that mailbox so that each
day, we delete anything older than one week. This puts the
responsibility of reporting "missing" email on the end user. We find
that we are maybe getting 5 - 10 false positives each month. Obviously,
that was a little higher early on until we established our white lists.

The other thing that I like about MessageLabs is the reporting. We get
reporting at the email address level so that we can determine who is
getting the most inappropriate activity. That way we can focus on an
individual user who may be causing issue, as opposed to a fault in the
system.

Thanks for the info Richard, out of interest roughly what percentage of
spam
do you reckon you caught using GFI?

We used GFI for a while and had very few problems. We ran into an issue
once with its ability to handle bounces it ended up logging an email
over and over to tune of 260MB of log space. That was an isolated
incident, though. There is still a good deal of overhead in that your
admin needs to setup and configure the rules and upkeep them. It was
easy to setup and use, just a little more time consuming that we wanted.

I can highly recommend MessageLabs as an excellent SPAM and VIRUS
catching service. It is a recurring monthly charge, but, in my opinion
well worth it. I think only pay $100-$200 a month. Don't quote me on
that though. We currently get about 70% spam mail (about 100-150k per
month), we do a lot of work for banks so, everybody spams us. The
service has reduced my overhead down to managing white/black lists and
that's it.

Hello to one an all,

I am a bit of a novice when it comes to exchange server 2000 and have
recently started working at a small company where span is a big problem.
I
have been investigating anti spam software and GFI Mail essentials seems
to
be the best viable option as I am working for a small company with
limited
budget. All the reviews I have read have been very good, however I
should
very much like to hear the views of anyone who has used it (particularly
in
a small corporate environment) and would like to hear their opinions or
any
problems they may have found.

Many Thanks

Graeme Robertson
