Yes, there is a firewall. All necessary ports must be open because the FE can resolve and access mailboxes on the Back end cluster, just not mailboxes on the back end single master server. The master is setup to allow owa access to it directly bypassing the FE with an address of the old domain i.e. mail1.olddomainname.com -----Original Message----- From: Lara, Greg [mailto:GLara@xxxxxxx] Sent: Monday, November 15, 2004 1:29 PM To: [ExchangeList] Subject: [exchangelist] RE: Front End/Back End http://www.MSExchange.org/ Amy, I'm not sure I understand your question. MX records don't really pertain to a FE/BE setup, they pertain to the delivery of SMTP mail from an outside mail system. If your FE server cannot access your "master" BE server, there could be network configuration issues involved. Can the FE server correctly resolve the DNS name of the BE server in question? Is there a firewall in between the two servers, and if so, is port 80 open? (500 internal server error) All 2000 server and exchange. We had to create a new domain because the internal and external had the same name (split). The master has an internal and external NIC. We have an MX record that is pointing to a host record that is using the IP address of the external NIC of the master back end server. I'm thinking this might be the problem. The internal NIC is not configured with a default gateway. Does anyone agree that removing the external NIC and configuring the default gateway on the internal NIC should fix the problem?
