Troy, My org is embarking on a similar migration (we're already on Win2k). My best advice for you would be to create a test environment that mirrors your production environment as closely as possible and perform the migration there. All the reading and advice and tips in the world won't provide the same benefit as hands on experience. Just as an example of something that can be encountered in real life that wasn't found in any document: in our environment, our regional offices have a single server that function as file server, email server (Exchange 5.5), and AD DC (with global catalog). When attempting to migrate mailboxes from the old to the new server (Exchange 2003), we found that because the Exchange 5.5 box was also the GC, the mailbox move wouldn't work. We had to install a separate DC to take the GC role before it would work. If we'd found this out during a production migration, we'd have been very unhappy campers. So, do read, do ask for advice, but test, test, test, then test again. And by the way, how long it takes to move 125 mailboxes depends on a number of variables, such as your network speed (10Mb, 100Mb, 1000Mb?), your server's "strength," and the size of the mailboxes. Once you've tested the migration several times, you'll know exactly what to expect :). Good luck. Soon I will be embarking on the quest to upgrade my exchange platform from Windows NT 4.0 Exchange 5.5 to Windows 2003. I have read multiple documents regarding the upgrade and migration, but there are always unforeseen issues. Has anyone encountered any obstacles while upgrading? How long does the mail box migration take for around 125 boxes? I also wanted to know if I should upgrade my AD from 2000 to 2003, what are the added benefits and potential pitfalls if I don't?
