Hello,

The defrag option does not do any compression. It simply recovers unused
buckets from the database which tend to build up over time.

Lorie, I tried running the eseutil on a test edb file and it went down
from 50......kb to about 45kb. It looks like it's working. From my
understanding this is simply a compression or defrag tool. Am I correct?
Or does this command actually do something else I'm not aware of. And
let's say for example that I had to do a complete restore of the edb
file. When doing the restore there shouldn't be any problems related to
this eseutil command being run. It should just restore the database in
it's backup state right? Thanks in advance,

John

Doing a defrag will recover most of the space.

I have an exchange database that is being backed up
using Veritas backup exec. Currently the size that is displayed for the
priv.edb using windows explorer is 6,110,728kb. (about 6.1gb) however
after reviewing the size of mailboxes in Exchange system manager I
doesn't look like my priv.edb file should be nearly that size. It should
be something more like 4 or 5 gb. Do I need to compress my priv.edb?
What exactly is happening? (Also when backing up with veritas, there is
actually about 7gb which is being backed up, I'm assuming this is
because of the verify which needs to run) Thanks in advance,

                John
