You can set up a recipient policy to change (or setup) all users mail
addresses within exchange.
Go into Recipient / Recipient Policies / from here you can specify a
default email address for everyone
You might use:  %1g%s@xxxxxxxxxxx   for a default SMTP primary address,
this would set John Smith's address as jsmith@xxxxxxxxxxx

Raj,

Yes all clients use the same SMTP server

mail.maltats.com for smtp/pop3 server

The maltats.com is being hosted by the ISP
The default REPLY address on outlook is set to  user@xxxxxxxxxxx on ALL
machines.

I should have set both email addresses to be maltats.com (my mistake
:(..) But I guess its too late to do that now short of re-installing the
entire system.

With regards to the SMTP connector.


How do I go about setting this up... sorry but I have never done this
and am still a bit green on the subject. Just to give u an idea .. ALL
systems including the server are set to use static IP`s in the 10.0.0.x
range and they all access the internet using a router. Internet
connectivety does not go through the server.

Marc, with your POP 3 account, do all clients use the same SMTP server
for outgoing messages? If so, it would be easier to setup a SMTP
connector in your Exchange server for Internet mail delivery. If you can
configure a SMTP connector and point it to your Internet SMTP server,
your POP3 clients can use the Exchange server as the outgoing SMTP
server. This way both Exchange MAPI and POP3/SMTP will use the same
outgoing transport. Incoming will be still using the external POP3
server.

What is happening is, when the user composes and sends a message to an
external recipient, the user is using the Exchange server as the default
transport. 

Why do you have two different addresses fro the same users such as
user@xxxxxxxxxxx and user@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx You can use the same address
user@xxxxxxxxxxx for both internal and external mails. If your user
accounts are configured to use multiple SMTP addresses as you have, you
need to check the default reply address is set to a valid address
(user@xxxxxxxxxxx), in this case I assume your maltats.com domain is
registered for Internet mails.

I am running a Server with Windows 2000 Small Business Server which
includees exchange 2000.

The server is hosting INTERNAL email for 20 users. The server is NOT
live on the internet and is not hosting External Email or a web Site.

The Client machines (running Windows 2000 Pro) have Outlook 200
installed and are set using an exchange mailbox. In the same outlook
profile i have also set a pop3 mail account for external email.

Internet is accessed through an adsl router connected to the 24port
cisco switch.

The Internal and external mail both work fine. but sometimes and it can
be quite frequent when a mail is sent from outlook to an external
address an error message is returned from the exchange server staing
that the message could not be delivered.

This does not always happen .... it seems that sometimes the mail goes
through the the exchange account set up on outlook.

I have tried to seperate the pop3 and the exchange account.. in 2
different outlook profiles and that seemed to have solved the problem
but it is quite cumbersome for the user to have to switch profiles
between internal and external accounts.

Is there anything i can do to solve the problem .?

The External email addresses of the users is <username>@maltats.com
whilst the internal address is <username>@maltats.local

Also for some strtange reason when sending an external email the
recieving end recieves the email but he tries to reply to it the address
comes up as @maltats.local which obviously results in an error sincec he
can not send to the local address from an external site.

Please help anyone .?
