Yes, you can update the underlying OS and it'll leave IIS in IIS5
emulation mode and Exchange will "limp" (not run, but limp along).

It's not supported. There are many things that fail. 

I experimented with this right after w2k3 was released...

Hmm.. Hard to say.  I know *originally* that wasn't the case because of
IIS.
The expected upgrade path is to upgrade to E2K3 and then upgrade the OS.


Regardless, I do think that the recovery scenario is enough to make me
cringe and run away screaming in the first place :)

While that's true, I seem to recall you can do an in-place upgrade of
your OS underneath Ex2K - so it will RUN on a Win2K3 server, just won't
install (the recovery scenarios are of course frightening).
