That is correct that the DS won't start. In 5.5 that's what DS/IS
consistency is for. If you want to put back a private store to a server on
the same network with a different name, you can do that. The requirement is
that the site and org are the same for a private store. You would not put
back the DS and the public store would have some issues with that, but a
private store can be put back, DS/IS run and a directory entry for the
mailbox would be created. You could then put a new NT account into the
Primary-Windows-NT-Account field and access the data.

This is better documented in the Exchange Disaster Recovery Whitepaper if
you'd like the exact steps. Been doing it this way since Exchange 4.x days
with servers on the same network in the same rack. Works well if it's just
mailbox data that you want.

In Exchange 2003 you could take advantage of RSG's, but that's outside of
this persons scope IMHO.

Hi

Unfortunately that won't be possible as the DS won't start. Since the server
is on the live network it cannot have the same name as the live one. Hence
restoring the directory will actually break it as the server name is held in
both the DS and transaction logs.

If you want a single mailbox restore I can talk you though it in detail as I
have done it many times but before I type it all out I want to be sure as it
quite a long procedure. Once I am sure that is what you want I am more than
willing.

Let me know..

Regards,

Paul Lemonidis.

FWIW, you could do this and re-ACL the mailbox with a new sID.

Hi Al

If you are trying to restore a single mailbox what you are trying to do here
won't work as the security on the restored directory will be incorrect for
the new domain as the SID's won't match. What exactly are you trying to do?

Let me know and I will try and help further.

Paul Lemonidis.

Hello All,

configuration in a seperate domain with same server name, exchange
organisation etc... I've been told that copying dir.edb, pub.edb and
private.edb from real system into the test server's mdbdata and dsadata

How can I solve this?

Thanks,
