Exchange 5.5 patching

I have inherited a site that has 5.5 installed. The previous admin made
a b@lls up you may say, in that he uninstalled 5.5 and then re-installed
it, without first uninstalling the various security patches first. Now I
have the job of re-applying these patches. The problem I am having, is
that when I attempt to install them, I get a message informing me that
they are already installed, of course, they are not. Does anyone know a
workaround...the server needs to be up and receiving mail now.
 
It's a bare 5.5 install, no SP's or patches yet.
