Hi Praveen

When you take backup of complete information store, irrespective of the backup
type followed , all transaction logs, check point files would be backed up

http://www.MSExchange.org/

Thanks for the info. Initialy i used NT backup utility and now i am using Arc
server backup. I am taking regular backups. But when i read this artical
http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Exchange-Dial-tone-Restore-Method-Part2.html
in fig 10 you can see a folder called "logs" is selected but i cant locate it
in my NT backup or Arc server utility. I know that logs are stored in
<drive:>\program files\exchsrv\MDBDATA\ by default, but these are not listed in
NT backup utility or Arc backup so that i can just click and select the logs to
be backed up. I need to manualy go to the directory and select it.

So i want to know should i manualy select these logs or if i just select
storage goups will this take care of logs also?? Can you please explain.

Praveen,

You should be using an Exchange aware backup package (built-in backup on
WS03 included) which handles the complexities of taking a consistent set of
files. The detail (up to a point) is not yours to worry about. That said your
backup is no use unless you're practiced in restoring it under a varying set of
circumstances and then a knowledge of the details will be very useful. Get
backing up and aim to understand what is going on and practice recovery.
Needless to say you can drown in information from Microsoft and there are
several worthy Exchange 2003 books which can help out. Practice recovery in the
lab is essential.

As you're asking the question I presume you're not well acquainted with the
complexities this subject can offer. Keep it simple to start with and backup to
tape or disk using Microsoft's built-in backup would be my initial approach.
Once you understand better what you're after the complexities if needed can
follow.
