this is very simple problem..in my opinion..

if i were you, i will use eseutil /p and isinteg  utility.

this will solve your problem.

and, Be sure to offline backup  before running eseutil...

From what I can gather the server is doing an online defrag of the private 
mailbox store and is constantly hitting a point in the mail store that it can't 
get past.

I am not backing up the mail store whilst it is doing a defrag.

I think the hardware is fine as far as I can tell.

Can a virus infected e-mail cause this problem?

Shaun,

Check to see if your backup and online time does not conflict.

Check your hardware such as Scsi controllers oor HDD.

defrag the database..

Very few times you will have to restore the database due to corruption..

Most of the times "1018" is bit ambigious, which may ask you to restore the 
database or run the chkdsk..

Do not run chkdsk with the option to automatically resolve the problems..

As per the information below I get the following messages, the store seems fine 
everything seems to be operating with some hiccups but nothing major.  I get 
this same set of errors every night the public mail store is fine....

Besides restoring the mail store, does anyone have any suggestions on what 
action to take??
