I had a very similar problem a few weeks back where a number of services
related to exchange kept failing.
I eventually solved the problem by installing Windows 2000 Server SP3

Badri,
My suggestion is open your MMC for Services and see if you can start the
service manually. Check also for dependencies for the SMTP Service to ensure
they are working. If the hang up persists, check to ensure that enough
physical memory is available as well as hard drive space. View the event log
for additional errors, reinstall E2K & Service Packs as a last resort.
