Best bet is to remove the 5.5 servers altogether as opportunity allows.
Personally, I wouldn't change it just for that. There's risk involved as
well as time and troubleshooting.

SMTP connectors don't have checkpointing. Checkpointing is good for large
binary blob type of messages (pics, wmv's, etc) over slow or unreliable
links. If this is all high-speed reliable networks, you could possibly get
it done. SMTP has less overhead and can be faster for regular message
traffic. In the event of an unreliable link, it will just resend the
message. Checkpointing allows x.400 connectors to resend from last
successful checkpoint.

Question, I'm currently using X.400 to connect to 5.5 sites. Will it be
better if I use an SMTP connector instead? What are the Pros and Cons?

Turn down logging, get rid of your legacy mailers (5.x and earlier) and then
get rid of the need for the MTA.
Turning down logging should help with the error message earlier though.

For some reason my Exchange 2000 server keeps generating event ID error:
9215. I've followed both KB articles Q170056 & Q261251 with no luck.

Event ID: 9215
A sockets error 0 on a connect() call was detected. The MTA will attempt to
recover the sockets connection. Control block index: 1. [BASE IL TCP/IP DRVR
11 262] (12)

What could I do to get rid ofthis?
