So basically, even if im running e2k standard with the 16gb limitation,
as long as my users keep their mailbox sizes down and mailbox management
runs, I should be in no danger of it hitting the 16gb limit?

Cheers

As your users delete mail from the database, whitespace (or 'holes' if
you
prefer) is created. The online overnight maintenance of Exchange
reorganises the database such that the whitespace is contiguous (as much
as possible, anyway). Exchange will then reuse this whitespace before
expanding the size of the database.

After you've shrunk the database, Exchange will then simply start to
expand it again as new mail flows. Expanding the database is a more
expensive operation than reusing the whitespace (on a performance
basis).

So what have you gained by shrinking the database? Nothing really. A
bit of disk space, which shouldn't matter that much if you've sized your
disk volumes well, and disk space is cheap.

It's not considered best practice at all; if anything, it just wastes
your time. You shouldn't causes any harm by doing it, but why do admin
tasks that you don't need to? I don't run regular defrags on any of my
customers'
Exchange servers - at least, not since Exchange 5.5 was released. :-)

I defrag my database on a regular basis and always thought that
it was a "best practice". Am I wrong about this? I have Exchange
standard edition with limited database size. After users archive and
mailboxes are deleted I often run the defrag to recover space. Is this
not recommended???

Sorry, I meant to say "isn't recommended" rather than "isn't

Yes, it's true that ESEUTIL will reduce the size of your
database if you
use it in offline defrag mode (the /d switch).

But ask yourself why you want to reduce the size of the
database.
Exchange will reuse the whitespace contained in the database,
and once
this has been reused, the physical size of the database will
expand
        again.
If you reduce the size of the database, it will only grow again
in the
        future.

The biggest risk with ESEUTIL is when you run it in repair mode
(the /p
switch). Basically, when the repair function finds errors, it
deletes
the entire page that the error is in, which means that users
will lose
some data. That's not always that much data, but if your CEO
opens a
message and the attachment is then missing... :-)

That's one of the reasons that using ESEUTIL /p on a database
that is
then put back into production isn't supported.

ESEUTIL is a valid, and useful, tool. But don't run it for the
sake of
        running it.
