Existing FE box is a w2k/IIS5 e2k machine. I am starting to consider throwing an interim desktop in my DMZ for the upgrade process. I am concerned about active directory, with regards to the exchange servers being added and removed. Since this will be a temporary box, I am concerned about adding it and removing it when the upgrade is finished. Also, can a front end e2003 box access a back end e2k server without any issues? -Jason -----Original Message----- From: Mulnick, Al [mailto:Al.Mulnick@xxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Wednesday, February 23, 2005 9:14 AM To: [ExchangeList] Subject: [exchangelist] RE: E2k to E2003 migration question http://www.MSExchange.org/ What is your existing FE server? FE server requirements are usually pretty low; you could use a desktop machine for an interim build. If you can't upgrade the fe server first, you'll be without webmail for the amount of time it takes you to upgrade it. That's because the web files come from the backend and get processed by the fe and sent to the client for rendering. If you don't have that "chain" in alignment, you break the functionality. You could also consider having webmail be directed directly to your be server for the migration period. Would require some changes to DNS and your cert depending on how you have it configured, but gets around the hardware issues. Some thoughts anyway, Al -----Original Message----- From: Jason Lehrhoff [mailto:techlists@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Wednesday, February 23, 2005 9:26 AM To: [ExchangeList] Subject: [exchangelist] E2k to E2003 migration question http://www.MSExchange.org/ I am about to do a migration introducing a brand new server. there is one thing in MS white papers that is bothering me, about front end servers. It says that 'all front end servers have to be upgraded first'. This is my dilemna. I am replacing my mail server with a new box, and then shifting that old mail server to be my new web server (also a front end exchange box). I can only upgrade my front end server after the back end one has been upgraded, giving me the extra server to replace. The only thing I can think of is uninstalling Exchange 2k from the front end box the day before the upgrade... but this would give us no web mail for at least 1 whole business day. Plus I would be constricted to installing E2003 on that same day ( a friday...and doing all the server replacements on the weekend). I wanted to get exchange installed/tweaked a few days ahead of time, so that I was sure that all public folders and such have replicated. any tips would be greatly appreciated. -Jason ------------------------------------------------------ List Archives: http://www.webelists.com/cgi/lyris.pl?enter=exchangelist Exchange Newsletters: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/newsletter.asp Exchange FAQ: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/larticle.asp?type=FAQ ------------------------------------------------------ Other Internet Software Marketing Sites: World of Windows Networking: http://www.windowsnetworking.com Leading Network Software Directory: http://www.serverfiles.com No.1 ISA Server Resource Site: http://www.isaserver.org Windows Security Resource Site: http://www.windowsecurity.com/ Network Security Library: http://www.secinf.net/ Windows 2000/NT Fax Solutions: http://www.ntfaxfaq.com ------------------------------------------------------ You are currently subscribed to this MSEXchange.org Discussion List as: al.mulnick@xxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe visit http://www.webelists.com/cgi/lyris.pl?enter=exchangelist Report abuse to listadmin@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ------------------------------------------------------ List Archives: http://www.webelists.com/cgi/lyris.pl?enter=exchangelist Exchange Newsletters: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/newsletter.asp Exchange FAQ: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/larticle.asp?type=FAQ ------------------------------------------------------ Other Internet Software Marketing Sites: World of Windows Networking: http://www.windowsnetworking.com Leading Network Software Directory: http://www.serverfiles.com No.1 ISA Server Resource Site: http://www.isaserver.org Windows Security Resource Site: http://www.windowsecurity.com/ Network Security Library: http://www.secinf.net/ Windows 2000/NT Fax Solutions: http://www.ntfaxfaq.com ------------------------------------------------------ You are currently subscribed to this MSEXchange.org Discussion List as: JLehrhoff@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe visit http://www.webelists.com/cgi/lyris.pl?enter=exchangelist Report abuse to listadmin@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx The HealthCare Chaplaincy is a multifaith community of professionals from many cultures dedicated to caring for persons in spirit, mind, and body.
