Here's a little trick...

Transaction logs actually compress very well.
Use NTFS compression on a bunch of them. 
This will give you sufficient disk space to start the services.
Run the online backup.

New server.  We just brought it online a few days ago.  I was having
problems with NetBack and just got it working this morning.  Yes there are a
bunch of transaction logs.
