Mark / Spencer - yes the check box cured it.

I'm slightly confused as to what the Recipient Policy check box does
here. I thought the Recipient Policy just referred to the address after
the @ so that if an e-mail domain changed it can be easily updated.
However where does the first part of the user e-mail address get set -
it appears to come from the Windows logon name ?

Untick the box that says something like 'Automatically update e-mail
addresses based on recipient policy' on the Email Addresses page

I'm going ga ga ..... ADU&C logon user is set to Gordon (christian name
only) but I want the e-mail address to be Gordon.Smith@ - I've added a
Gordon.Smith@ to the SMTP e-mail address and he receives e-mail ok, but
when I try to set the SMTP default address to Gordon.Smith@ after a
minute it reverts back to Gordon@ - it's not a show stopper but why does
it keep reverting back ?
